4: LITERATURE AS COMMUNICATION
Activity
1: Something Old, Something New
Take a look at the “old woman-young girl” and other
similar illusions.
At first, you would see an old woman (or man). But
by changing perspective, it becomes a young girl (or boy). But
perspective is not just in our sight, but also in thought. Take a look at the “boat-land”
perspective.
You would see two men having
different ideas on what they saw. The man stranded on the land would think that
the boat will save him. The man stranded on the boat would think that docking
to the land will save him. They both thought that they will be safe.
Perspective is how you see and think about the world around you.

his color.

Filipino”. You will know that the message conveyed by the poem is that your
heart and soul will remain Filipino despite foreign influences. If you are born
in the Philippines, you are Filipino at heart.
Activity 7: Lights, Camera, Action
There are many ways to tell a
certain message. One of these is the language of the camera.
·
Film
grammar is defined as follows:
o A
frame is a single still image. It is analogous to a letter.
o A
shot is a single continuous recording made by a camera. It is analogous to a
word.
o A
scene is a series of related shots. It is analogous to a sentence. The study of
transitions between scenes is described in film punctuation.
o A
sequence is a series of scenes which together tell a major part of an entire
story, such as that contained in a complete movie. It is analogous to a
paragraph.
·
Visual literacy
o
is the
ability to interpret, negotiate, and make meaning from information presented in
the form of an image, extending the meaning of literacy, which commonly
signifies interpretation of a written or printed text. Visual literacy is based
on the idea that pictures can be “read” and that meaning can be through a
process of reading.
Activity 8: Speak Easy
Speech choirs are
performance groups that recite speeches in unison, often with elements of choreography
and costuming to help bring the speech to life. 4. It is also called choral
speaking. It has a hallowed tradition. The first plays put on by the Greeks
featured choruses of speakers.
VOICE QUALITY
• The ability to combine successfully the light, medium, and dark voices in
the choir (using these groups for their natural basic sounds and/or combining
them for special effects).
• The ability to communicate, through voice, reactions to thoughts or
emotions.
NUMBER OF VOICES • The ability to add or subtract whole sections, banks, smaller groups, or
solo speakers to increase or diminish the power or riclmess of the sound to
better express the meaning.
BODILY MOVEMENT • Ability to use gesture, choreography, or other movement to enhance
communication and better express meaning.
PITCH
• Pitch refers to the variations of the voice on the musical scale and is
generally referred to as inflection. Children generally have little problem with
pitch because they use it naturally and freely.
POWER
• Ability to use volume, force, or loudness as emphasis in appropriate places
to better express feeling and meaning. A power build should be related to the
elements of a sentence and/or growing emotion.
PHRASING AND RHYTHM • Ability to use phrasing and rhythm as reinforcements for each other. Each
must blend together to better express the meaning of the verse.
TEMPO
• Tempo refers to the rate of speed at which a reading progresses. The
ability to balance the rhythm of a piece and the tempo of performance.
Tempo should relate to the central "beat" of the poem. (Too fast? Too slow?)
STAGING
• the ability to successfully organize and position the choir on stage or risers
for mixing performance effect. The ability to stage entrances and exits
which enhance the mood of the poem and performance. The ability to
"costume" speakers in a way which also enhances the performance as a
whole.

|
so
|
(remember FANBOYS)

Activity 11: Three Minute Pause
I. Perspective is the way you see and think
about the world around you. Perspective varies from each individual since they
have different experiences, environment, decisions, and mentality.
II. Perspective can be changed through different
interactions, such as communication and studying. This expands knowledge, and
allows more connections with other people or places.
Activity 13: Pause and Ponder
Literature
as Communication
|
Different traditions,
cultures, and perspective can be taught through literature. Literature can be
written works that have lasting artistic merits. They can be books and
writings published on a particular subject. Because literature can inform
people, this allows them to change their perspective and learn new things
even if it’s from old cultures.
|
Informational Text
is a subset of the larger category of non-fiction (Duke &
Bennett-Armistead, 2003). Its primary purpose is to inform the reader about the
natural or social world. Different from fiction and other forms of non-fiction,
informational text does not utilize characters.
